Tools, paper & setup

Tools

This is a list of suggestions. However, you don’t need everything on the list and you can use anything you have at home. Feel free to experiment with unusual tools and materials.

• Chalk to use on darker paper
• Charcoal
• Colouring pens and pencils
• Craft knife
• Foam brushes (these are brilliant)
• Gluestick
• Ink in any colours
• Marker pens
• Paint in any colours
• Paintbrushes of different sizes
• Pencils of different hardness levels
• Ruler, set square, compass, eraser and sharpener
• Scissors
• Tracing paper (Geometric shapes workshop)
• Anything else you can find to make marks with!

Paper

Any paper you can find, it’s fun to work on large sheets of paper and to stick it up on the wall so you can draw standing up.

You could use plain news print paper, wrapping paper, brown wrapping paper. Keep any paper you find, turn it over to see the clean or unprinted size. Coloured paper is great as you can use white chalk and black paint for contrast.

Setup

Watch the session on the largest screen you have available. Ideally, you’ll view the letters you’re drawing and hear Sarah’s voice on the larger screen, while you play the Spotify soundtrack on your mobile phone.

You can work flat on a desk, or clip your paper to a board and work standing up—it’s brilliant to try working in different positions. When you stand up and work with a large sheet of paper you can be really free with your arm and hand movements.
